January in the Garden

Happy New Year from the Scottsdale Farms team.  January is a great time for gardeners to plan.  Purchase seeds now to ensure you get the varieties you want.  Plan your vegetable garden layout and remember that crop rotation benefits the health of your plants as well as their yield.  Empty and clean containers in anticipation of Spring.

Your outdoor containers need to be watered regularly in the Winter months.  Water soluble fertilizer will keep your Winter annuals healthy and blooming.  Trim spent blooms to encourage additional blooms.

Prune dead and crossing branches on deciduous shrubs and ornamental trees.  Pruning evergreens should wait until Spring.  Warm days are good opportunities for outdoor garden chores.  View your landscape beds from outside and inside to determine if they need adjustments.  We are fortunate to be able to plant year-round, so consider planting additional evergreens on one of our warm Winter days.

Houseplants may get dusty during the Winter months.  Clean them with a moist, soft cloth or gloves.  Check leaves and stems for pests and use insecticidal soaps and horticultural oil as needed.  Rotate your houseplants occasionally to maintain an upright or bushy habit.

Daisy Dollars redemption runs from January 2-15.  Certain trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, houseplants and home décor will be eligible.  Watch our website and social media for information on fun activities.  We look forward to spending the new year with our valued customers and hope to see you soon.
