March in the Garden

Signs of Spring are arriving in our gardens and at Scottsdale Farms.  Trucks have been rolling in with an abundance of new trees and shrubs.  Our Scottsdale Farms team has been very busy growing our annuals and perennials – they will be ready for your gardens soon!  Our average last day of frost is April 15th.  Watch our overnight low temperatures and be sure to protect any tender plants.

Ornamental grasses should be cut back and cleaned up.  Pruning becomes tricky once Spring growth begins, so try to finish up these garden chores early in the month.  Prune out dead or damaged branches on trees and shrubs.  Watch for buds on plants like blueberries and hydrangeas.  Take care to avoid pruning out any flowers.  Refresh mulch as needed – it will help prevent weed seeds from germinating.

March is a great time to add soil amendments to your vegetable garden.  You may plant seeds like lettuce, carrots, beets, parsley and cilantro.  Start seeds like tomatoes and peppers indoors to protect these warm season plants from getting snapped by cold.

You may start to see weeds popping up in your beds.  Pulling weeds by hand after a rain shower makes this chore easier and helps to remove the entire root.  Pre-emergent herbicides are helpful for those weeds that haven’t germinated yet.

March is a hopeful month and we look forward to seeing you in our garden center.  We have many new varieties and tried-and-true staples to choose from in our landscape departments.  Check our website and Facebook/Instagram pages for updates on fun classes, informative seminars and presentations, and the anticipated Customer Appreciation Day.  We are looking forward to seeing our regular customers and hope to meet those who haven’t been to Scottsdale Farms before.  Please remember that we love to see pictures of your gardens, so don’t hesitate to share them with us.

Happy almost Spring!
