May in the Garden

Great Time to Plant Vegetables!

May is a great time to plant vegetables!  Soil and air temperatures are optimal for transplants.  Be sure to space your plants appropriately because they grow quickly in these perfect conditions.  Supports are very helpful with vining plants like tomatoes, cucumbers and squash.  Remember to add some companion plants, like herbs and flowers to attract pollinators.  Espoma Tone products are organic, slow release fertilizers that will feed your vegetables during this time of rapid growth.  There is a Tone for just about any type of garden and our associates can help you choose the right fertilizer for your vegetable garden.

Trees and shrubs are actively growing and may need a dose of fertilizer.  We have a variety of fertilizers that will help your plants look and perform their best.  If you noticed your beds were in need of some pizazz last year, we can help you add color, texture and elegance.   We have many new additions to our plant offerings and are here to help you with your choices.  Managing pests and disease helps plants thrive.  We offer BioAdvance Tree & Shrub, a systemic product that protects and feeds plants for 12 months. I’ve used this on my conifers and throughout my own landscape with excellent results.  Our plant pharmacy has a vast array of products to use for specific issues and our team can help you decide what to use.  We have added signs with QR codes that will take you directly to our How to Install & Maintain Healthy Plants webpage.  This site takes the guesswork out of the process of planting and caring for your plants.

Our annuals look fabulous.  Our team can help you choose combinations for your beds and containers.  Look around and find inspiration in the many container combinations available for sale.  If you prefer, we are happy to plant your containers for you.  Container creations typically require more frequent fertilizer to perform their best.  We offer a wide variety of fertilizers and one will suit your needs.  Just remember that nutrients leach out of the containers each time they are watered, so a monthly fertilizer schedule may be beneficial.

A mixture of flowering shrubs, perennials and annuals will help your landscape bloom from Spring through Fall.  Sweeps of color are very dramatic while vignettes of flowering plants make a statement throughout your beds.  Our landscape design team will visit your home and draw a plan to refresh or create beds that are customized for you.  Let us know if you’d like us to work with you on your project.

It’s always a good time to add mulch to your beds.  A 2-3 inch layer is idea to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and keep plant roots cool as we head into Summer.  Deer and rabbit repellents are helpful to deter these voracious eaters.  We have sprays and granules and recommend using these products in our area.

Be sure to check our website frequently – our workshops can fill up quickly and we want you to be able to take advantage of these informative and fun classes.  You can book a private class for your group by contacting our events team.

Our May garden club meeting will be Tuesday, May 13 at 10:00am.  The topic will be “Success in the Vegetable Garden.”  Come share your tips and challenges with fellow gardeners.
